Psychology and Neuropsychology

Deborah E. Anderson, PhD, RYT is a Licensed Psychologist and Neuropsychologist, and a Registered Yoga Teacher. She holds a doctorate in Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine from the University of North Texas and completed a two-year post-doctoral Fellowship in Neuropsychology at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute in Los Angeles.

Her therapy practice includes individual and couples therapy with mostly an adult population. She draws upon her training in cognitive-behavioral therapy, neuroscience and other therapeutic modalities including mind-body medicine (such as relaxation, guided imagery, and hypnosis) to treat a variety of general psychiatric and medical disorders. Her goal is to help clients understand the underlying thoughts and emotions that create distress and dis-ease and to help them build a “tool kit for life” from which to reduce symptoms of stress and other physical/emotional pain.

All of her personal and professional experiences have taught her that we have the power to profoundly change our lives by changing our minds.

Dr. Anderson’s specialized training in Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine allows her to work with patients in both prevention and treatment of illnesses. Treatment of these disorders is typically multi-faceted and may include components such as educating the patient and family about mind-body connections, teaching adaptive coping skills (e.g., pain management, stress management, acceptance of chronic health issues, etc.), adoption of healthy lifestyle changes, and more traditional psychotherapy.

She also has specialized training in Neuropsychology, which involves the assessment of brain-behavior relationships. She works with children (ages 6+) and adults to diagnose conditions such as learning disabilities, ADHD and dementias, or to evaluate cognitive functioning associated with acquired injuries such as head trauma or strokes, or other medical conditions.

Dr. Anderson is an Associate Clinical Professor in the UCLA Department of Psychology where she supervises doctoral level students in assessment.

In 2006, Dr. Anderson became a yoga teacher and turned her attentions toward Eastern practices of mind-body medicine, including yoga, meditation, Buddhist psychology, mindfulness, and other forms of energy medicine such as traditional Chinese Medicine and Qi Gong. Studying these materials was like reading “good psychology” and further confirmed why these ancient forms of wisdom have stood the test of time. The growing body of research is demonstrating that yoga and meditation can be used to alleviate symptoms associated with many physical and emotional conditions (e.g., chronic pain, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, to name a few) in addition to creating lasting changes in brain structure and function. Her combined knowledge of psychology and yoga creates a unique perspective with which to approach clients in both practices. “My work as a psychologist has made me a better yoga teacher and my yoga teacher training has made me a better psychologist”. She teaches weekly yoga and meditation classes and her schedule can be accessed at

Dr. Anderson has worked as a forensic consultant for neuropsychological and psychological injury cases.
